Why block instead of wood for raised beds?

Wood beds in this climate rot from the soil side out — even treated lumber gives you maybe a decade, and cedar costs nearly as much as block now. A block bed is permanent: no rot, no rebuilding, no leaching preservatives into the soil you grow food in.

Can you match the garden beds to an existing wall or patio?

Usually, yes. The manufacturers behind the systems we install keep their core lines in production, so if your wall or patio is one of those systems, the beds can be built from the same block and cap. Bring us a photo and we'll identify it.

How tall can a garden bed wall be?

Most raised beds run two to five courses — seat height or below — which is well inside what these systems handle without engineering. If a bed doubles as a retaining wall holding back a slope, the retaining wall rules take over: proper base, drainage, and past 1.2 m, engineering.

Do block beds drain properly?

Better than wood. The beds sit on a gravel base, the block cores drain, and fabric keeps soil where it belongs — so roots get moisture without sitting in winter soup. For plants that hate wet feet, we can add drain rock below the soil blend.

Wood raised beds rot — usually in five to ten wet BC winters. A block garden bed never does. We build raised beds and freestanding garden walls with the same segmental systems as our retaining walls: Allan Block, the Melville line for a clean modern profile, and Weston Stone for a classic tumbled look. Filled with proper soil over a drainage base, they grow better, hold their shape, and outlast the house's next three fences.
